Got Writer’s Block? Here are Some Tips to Kick it to the Curb

The ever-annoying “Writer’s Block” is a trait that all types of writers have in common. This pesky bug is extremely frustrating. However, with the right mindset and attitude, a writer can quickly recover and overcome this hurdle.  Are you ready to “Beat the Block?” Here are some tips to help get your creative juices flowing once again.

Write Daily. Get into the habit of writing every day for 5 to 10 minutes. Jot your ideas and thoughts down. Don’t think about grammar. Just write.

Pick a Daily Creative Time.  Set aside a block of writing time when you are at your mental best. This is often in the morning or later at night. 

Set a Timer.  Try engaging in 25 minutes of uninterrupted writing. When the timer goes off, take a short break.  This can help you focus. 

Use a Prompt.  Pick an easy topic and write about it for fifteen minutes. This will spark your creativity and build your writing confidence.

Create Deadlines. Set clear goals and deadlines for each phase of your project.  For instance, aim to write 1,000 words a day.

Brainstorm.  Go beyond just doing an online search for topic ideas. Take a look at Pinterest for visual cues, or pick up scrapbooking to gather ideas.  Do a ‘brain dump’ and put your ideas into different topic ‘buckets’. 

Avoid Comparisons.  Don’t compare yourself to more experienced writers. We each have our unique voice, skills, and perspectives to share. Be yourself and let your writing reflect that. 

Take Frequent Breaks. If you’ve been staring at a blank page for a while, it’s time to get moving. Go for a walk or take a hike in nature to stimulate your senses and relax. Your subconscious will keep working on the story even while you’re not.

Do Some Reading. Pick up a book, magazine, or newspaper to find fresh ideas. Poetry and short stories work too. 

Self Care. Be kind to yourself. Your creative skills will come back to you. 

Change Your Environment.  Get out of your usual writing spot and try someplace new. Visit a coffee shop or a local park for some quiet and relaxation.

Do a New Activity. Go on an adventure or explore a nearby place you’ve never been to. It will open up your eyes. 

Talk to an Imaginary Friend.  Pretend you are telling your story to a friend. Describe what it’s about and why you are stuck. 

Observe.  Take a look at your surroundings. Notice the details. Take note of what you see. 

Self-Reflection.  Journal your inner thoughts, feelings, and fears. Set them aside. They don’t define you or your writing. 

Writer’s block stems from a variety of things. I think it’s fair to say just about every writer has experienced some of these pitfalls.

  • Anxiety and stress. They can interfere with writing and lower self-confidence. 
  • Anger and irritation. These can surface when a writer doesn’t feel recognized.  
  • Apathy. Writers can feel apathetic when they are expected to follow the rules of writing.  
  • Comparison. When a writer compares their work to others, they often feel disappointed and struggle to move forward.

The ebbs and flows of creativity are a normal part of the writing process. If you can recognize when it’s happening to you, you’ll have a greater chance of getting through the drama.  Stay confident, take breaks, and enjoy living!
